Parklea Community Hub

This project involved the creation of a new visitor destination and community hub for Parklea Branching Out, a horticulture‑led charity based on the River Clyde in Port Glasgow. The interiors were designed to support learning, social connection and wellbeing within a welcoming, inclusive environment rooted in the therapeutic value of horticulture.

The project includes a public café, training spaces, a catering kitchen and supporting facilities, alongside a strategic site plan to guide the long‑term development of the organisation. INCH worked closely with the client to ensure that each space was functional, flexible and accessible, while feeling calm, dignified and non‑institutional.

The interiors respond to the diverse needs of the people supported by Parklea Branching Out, including adults and children with learning and physical disabilities, people with mental health challenges, school leavers, those seeking supported employment, older people and wider community groups. Spaces were carefully planned to encourage participation, independence and confidence, while fostering a strong sense of belonging and community.

Throughout the project, design decisions were informed by an understanding of the positive impact of green, horticultural environments on mental and physical health. The resulting spaces support training, work experience, social interaction and public engagement, creating a setting that is both purposeful and uplifting.

The completed project has been recognised with a Scottish Design Award 2025 – Best Public Building in Scotland, celebrating its contribution to inclusive design, placemaking and community wellbeing.
