Hawthorn House Care Home
The interior design of Hawthorn House was delivered as part of a wider programme of new‑build residential care homes for Glasgow City Council, developed to provide high‑quality, person‑centred care environments.
The design was informed throughout by dementia‑inclusive and evidence‑based design principles, with a focus on supporting orientation, independence and ease of use for residents. Spatial planning, colour strategy and material selection were carefully coordinated to create environments that are legible, calm and adaptable to changing needs over time.
A clear wayfinding strategy was established through the use of distinct colour palettes for each of the four residential units on every floor, enabling residents to differentiate between areas and navigate the building more intuitively. These measures support cognitive accessibility while also providing each unit with a clear identity within the overall scheme.
The resulting interiors balance operational requirements with a non‑institutional character, delivering robust, functional spaces that prioritise comfort, dignity and safety within a contemporary care setting.
