Brain Health & Dementia Resource Centre
Set within a historic square in Kilmarnock, Scotland, the refurbishment of the Brain Health & Dementia Resource Centre was guided by a clear ambition: to create a place that feels welcoming, reassuring and inclusive for everyone who walks through its doors.
From the earliest stages, dementia‑friendly design principles shaped every aspect of the project. The interiors were carefully considered to support orientation, reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm, while remaining accessible and inviting to people living with dementia and carers. Colour, contrast, lighting and materials were sensitively balanced to create spaces that feel familiar, legible and comfortable.
The centre provides a vital hub for information, advice, community services and peer support, offering people living with dementia and their carers a place of connection, understanding and support. The design intentionally avoids an institutional feel, instead creating warm, humane spaces that encourage conversation, confidence and dignity.
Designed by Lynsey Hutchinson for Graven®, this project demonstrates the powerful role interior design can play in shaping positive experiences — supporting wellbeing, fostering community and ensuring that everyone feels valued and understood.
