Dementia Friendly Toolkits

INCH were appointed by North Lanarkshire Council to deliver a Colours research and design proposal, developed to support the use of colour within communal areas of long‑term care and supported living environments. The project provides the local authority with a range of clear, practical colour options that can be confidently adopted across its housing portfolio.

Developed in close consultation with tenants and residents, the colour schemes respond directly to user needs while aligning with current best‑practice guidance for environments designed for older people, those living with dementia, and neurodivergent users. All proposals comply with British Standards for accessibility and inclusive design.

The resulting document enables the Client to make informed, evidence‑based decisions on colourways and interior specifications, ensuring environments are not only visually welcoming but also supportive for individuals experiencing cognitive change and age‑related visual impairment.

Each detailed colour scheme is supported by overarching design principles that explain the rationale behind colour selection. This guidance provides a robust framework for engaging with stakeholders, while contributing to the ongoing development of knowledge in the field of inclusive interior design for older people and those living with dementia.
