INCH led a three‑year research and design study for North Lanarkshire Council and Trust Housing Association, exploring best‑practice approaches to housing design for an ageing population.

The project combined an extensive literature review with applied design research, examining how existing housing stock could be remodelled and extended to better support ageing, dementia and future care needs. The work culminated in the publication of three best‑practice design guides, developed to inform strategic decision‑making and support long‑term adaptability.

These guides provide practical, evidence‑based recommendations to help unlock the potential of existing homes, enabling safer, more inclusive living environments that can respond flexibly to changing needs over time.
